Nigel Crawhall is Chief of Section for Small Islands and Indigenous Knowledge in the Natural Sciences Sector of UNESCO. Nigel is the former Director of Secretariat for the Indigenous Peoples of Africa Coordinating Committee and is a former member of the Steering Committees of the World Commission on Protected Areas and the Commission on Environmental, Economic and Social Policy, both under IUCN. He has contributed to work on management and governance of cultural and spiritual landscapes, with a focus on indigenous peoples and spiritually based approaches to diverse landscapes and seascapes. He provided the Chapter on Social and Economic Influences Shaping Protected Areas in Worboys et al (2015) Protected area governance and management. He has a background in participatory mapping and modelling with indigenous peoples, providing contributions to UNESCO’s Division for Cultural Policies and Intercultural Dialogue.
He holds a PhD in Sociolinguistics from the University of Cape Town.
