Petrified Forest MTB Adventure 2020 Lesvos Island UNESCO Global Geopark

On Sunday 11th October, the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest will host the final of “LESVOS RIDE GRAND PRIX MTB series 2020”  in Sigri. The race will offer the participants the one of a kind experience to compete on the trails of the Lesvos Petrified Forest, a truly unique natural monument. The athletes will cross the Petrified Forest cycling next to million-year-old petrified tree trunks. The route is short and follows low altitude trails, but it is also demanding and has many technical difficulties. The starting point of the race will be at the premises of the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest. All the health protocols for the Covid-19 pandemic will be strictly followed.

Lesvos Island UNESCO Global Geopark is an ideal destination for outdoor sport-activities all year around. It offers a variety of routes and trails of different difficulty levels for hiking, trekking, running, biking. Athletic events such as the Mountain Trail Run and Mountain Bike Races are often organized in Lesvos Geopark by the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest offering the participants a great opportunity to enjoy the nature of the island.
Locals, refugees and visitors from all over the world can participate in these events and have the unique experience of competing while crossing amazing landscapes in the mountains that change form volcanic geosites and areas full of impressive geological formations rich in flora and fauna to picturesque villages with an traditional architecture.

This summer the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest co-organized with the local authorities the “Stipsi MTB” Race on the slopes of the volcano of Lepetymnos and through the narrow streets of Stipsi village and also the “Skalochori MTB” Race across the volcanic monuments of the area.

The athletic events are implemented within the framework of the «Rural regeneration through systemic heritage-led strategies — RURITAGE» HORIZON 2020 Programme.
